Fanboys
Review is a little different today. These are the comments I wrote during the movie:
The scroll at the beginning is poor. Just not funny. Particularly the 'sent from iPhone' comment. Not funny.
This movie was in the making for multiple years. Not shocking this finished product went stright to DVD. Silly excuse for a road movie. While I like the concept, in theory, the execution is lacking.
No way this guy actually has cancer. Seems like one of those standard plot tricks, where we find out in the start of the third act that it was a lie to get the one guy back in the group. It's also a level of heaviness that seems out of place.
Chubby guy uses too many non-Star Wars references.
The Star Wars trivia asked by Knowles is weak.
Death Star metaphor is lame.
They got the music right. No song released after 1998.
Love the Kevin Smith sequence. He's a pimp, literally. Also cool to see the sexy stud from Clerks 2.
Some of the best material is at the end.
Nice cameos by Seth Rogen. He plays at least 3 parts. Love seeing Joe Lo Truglio.
No idea what Kristin Bell is doing here. Her existence in the story is inexplicable. She is a geek, but does not seem to like anyone else in the group. Why is she there? At least make her pretend to be friends with them early on. I also hate the Hollywood idea of having hot women that guys aren't interested in. Complete BS. No way a guy thinks of Kristen Bell as "just one of the guys." Don't care how she acts.
Apparently the kid does have cancer. Leads to some heavy moments that seem a little out of place.
Like all the cameos amongst Lucas' guards. Danny McBride's getting popular. I like him, but I can't point to why.
End comments.
Postscript:
If you're not a fan of Star Wars, don't bother. Considering how popular Star Wars is, not a huge problem for most, I would think. In the end, Fanboys is just okay. It does a lot of cute things without actually being all that funny. It's moderately entertaining.
